How to summarize a podcast episode and keep the parts worth remembering

By GHZ Creative · · 5 min read

A two-hour episode can hold five minutes you actually need: one recommendation, one number, one name. Listening to all of it to find them is a poor use of an afternoon.

What works today

getbrief reads videos. Many podcasts publish every episode on YouTube, as a video of the conversation or as a still image with audio. If the episode is on YouTube, paste its link and you get a brief.

Audio-only platforms are different. A link to an episode that only exists on a podcast app cannot be read. Check whether the show also posts on YouTube, which most large ones do.

Pick the length that fits the episode

  • Short tells you whether the episode is worth your time.
  • Normal gives you the main points in order, the numbers and the quotes.
  • Detailed keeps more of the discussion. It needs Pro or a credit pack.
  • “For AI” reads the whole transcript in chunks, which suits very long episodes. See how to hand a video to your own AI.

If the video has captions, getbrief uses them. If it does not, it transcribes the audio, for videos up to 90 minutes.

What a podcast brief gives you

The brief starts with the answer to the episode title, then the main points, then a Worth remembering list: the books, tools, names, figures and quotes you would otherwise rewind to find. Each point on a YouTube episode can carry a timestamp, so you can open the video at that exact moment and listen to the original.

Questions you can ask afterwards

With Pro you can ask the episode questions in plain language, such as “What did the guest recommend for a first hire?” or “Where do the two hosts disagree?”. The answer comes from the transcript.

A note on interviews

Podcasts are conversations. A guest can be confident and wrong, and a summary repeats what was said. The last section of each brief lists claims made without evidence. Check the numbers that you plan to act on, as explained in how accurate a video summary is.

Paste the next episode link on the home page and see how much of it you needed.
